This week’s blog focuses on the sexualization of black women. Sexualization refers to the process of a non-sexual person or thing becoming sexual. While some may think being viewed sexually is a good thing, it’s harmful.

This leads to black women being viewed as promiscuous, and young black girls being called “fast.” The sexualization of black women goes back to slavery; a time where black women were considered “Jezebels,” a stereotype still portrayed in the media.

The biggest consequence of black women being sexualized is that black women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault. Because black women are seen as sexual, their simple existence means they are “asking for it.”

The infographic below shows how black women are sexualized in family television shows and movies.

Next week's blog will go into the representation of natural hair. See ya next Monday morning at 11!
